Infotainment HiL Test Bench

PORTABLE HIL TEST BENCH TO SIMULATE INFOTAINMENT COMPONENTS

The infotainment test bench HiL developed by CANWAY is a highly complex simulation system designed to test components and perform integration tests on electronic control units (ECUs) used in automotive environments. This is a so-called HiL test bench (Hardware in the Loop).

The portable infotainment test bench in a case was ordered by a well-known automotive OEM and designed, developed and fabricated by CANWAY at the customer's request. Today, different design variants of the portable HiL test bench are utilized to integrate modern infotainment applications. The test bench realistically visualizes the majority of components in an automotive infotainment system.

The main task of the test bench is to test an infotainment system as it interacts with telecommunication applications – easily and without any local restrictions. For that purpose the case is equipped with the central control units and multimedia elements, for example the cockpit display, multifunctional rotary switches, loudspeakers and so on. In addition to real components there are also a combination of electronics modules designed to simulate operating statuses and signal variables in the test bench. In other words, test bench users are able to directly test their own infotainment application across the entire network of systems. The benefits are clear for all to see: The development does not need a fully equipped vehicle. With that in mind, a great deal of value is placed during the test bench concept phase on flexibility, in the sense of being able to retrospectively extend and alter existing configurations. That makes sense when the dynamic demands of modern developments are taken into consideration.

The real control units are integrated in the test bench to be able to run realistic simulations. At the same time the test engineer is able to access, and if necessary, manipulate and analyze all common bus systems in use in the automotive industry (for example, CAN, LIN, MOST, FlexRay, BroadR-Reach Ethernet). That means it is also possible to make available to the network of systems bus devices that are not installed in the case by means of a software-based restbus simulation.

Significant focus is devoted to error prevention and the long-term reliability of the network of control units while developing automotive electronics. With this in mind, CANWAY also offers the product line CW-300 series of test bench technology. These proven modules offer diverse electronics solutions that are specifically designed to meet the demands placed on HiL test benches. It is possible to integrate the modules in the initial system configuration or retrofit them at any time. The test bench described here includes a module to simulate the current operating statuses of the vehicle (parking, driving and idling). In addition, CANWAY offers further modules for classic measuring and control purposes (M&C). These modules have been specifically designed for use in HiL test benches.  For example: The CW-322 low signal relay interface, the CW-326 failure injection unit (to provoke specific errors) as well as the CW-311 wheel speed pulse conditioner (simulates a wheel speed sensor).
