CW-201

SIGNAL COMPUTING

Based on extremely powerful signal processors the CW-201 serves to provide multi-channel, real-time processing of audio signals. Primarily designed as a development platform for sound design in motor vehicles, the CW-201 is also suitable for vibroacoustic applications. With up to 18 analog inputs and also 18 analog outputs it is possible to connect microphones, vibration sensors and audio amplifiers directly to the device.

In addition to complete galvanic isolation of input channels, output channels and the power supply to the sensors, the extensive range of technical features including digital interfaces through to a connection for an encoder is particularly worthy of attention. The robustness of the overall mechanical construction meets the requirements placed on a development and prototyping platform for mobile deployment.

OVERVIEW

The CW-201 is an extremely powerful platform for analyzing and processing signals. The primary interface of the system comprises 18 analog inputs and outputs respectively. It is optionally possible to connect electret and "ICP® supplies to the inputs; for this purpose they are organized in two groups. Once digitized the input variables are processed on a 500 MHz TigerSHARC signal processor from Analog Devices. This powerful DSP core was selected to calculate demanding multi-channel algorithms with a high resolution and accuracy.

With the CW-201 it is possible to undertake complex tasks in the field of sound design. Its capabilities when analyzing sounds include calculating spectrum and cepstrum. Two digital inputs to acquire speed and angle of rotation data make the CW-201 an ideal system for monitoring rotating parts per order analysis. With the TigerSHARC processor it is even possible to realize complicated feed-back controls in industrial plant in real time.

In addition to DSP the CW-201 is equipped with a communication processor to link digital inputs/outputs, CAN bus up to 1 Mbps, 100 Mbps Ethernet and USB 1.1 devices. As a consequence, that guarantees it is possible to implement control signals and exchange data at very high data transmission rates using existing controllers.

HARDWARE IN DETAIL

The arithmetic unit of the CW-201 consists of an ADSP-TS201S TigerSHARC signal processor from Analog Devices. The DSP functions at a clock frequency of 500 MHz. In addition to its internal 24 MB RAM external 64 or 128 MB SDRAM are also optionally available, which the processor accesses via a 64 bit data bus. The TigerSHARC processor is connected by means of a 32 bit bus with an Xilinx Spartan3 FPGA that makes possible the communication between the DSP and periphery devices of the CW-201, including the analog section. DSP software and parameter sets for the algorithms are saved to a 64 MB Flash EEPROM. The CW-201 is designed as a development platform; it supports the tool chain from Analog Devices and MATLAB/Simulink.

The analog frontend is equipped with 18 analog inputs and outputs respectively. In their present configuration they are designed to connect microphones and sensors. If required it is possible to active the power supply for electret microphones or ICP® per software. The analog signals are discretisized by a high-quality A/D converter and issued via a D/A converter following processing in the DSP. The converters are optimized for use in audio applications. Their frequency band ranges from 1 Hz to 20 kHz. The sampling rates are optionally 48 or 96 kHz; resolution is 24 bit.

Thanks to the modular design of the CW-201 it is possible to exchange input and output stages to adapt to special requirements. For instance, it is possible to extend the frequency response for ultrasound (up to approx. 10 MHz) without any difficulty. It is equally possible to replace the converters with modules with enhanced response characteristics below 1 Hz to suit control systems with greater time constants.

As well as the dedicated analog section further interfaces are also provided, which are controlled via a Freescale MPC5200 communication processor incorporated for the purpose. An interface for control signals realizes digital inputs/outputs; four respectively at 3.3 V and power supply voltage. Two inputs are provided for TTL level signals, which are preferably used to synchronize the DSP algorithms on a tachometer generator.

To exchange greater data volumes the CW-201 is equipped with two CAN buses (low-speed “K-CAN” to 125 kbps, high-speed CAN up to 1 Mbps) and an Ethernet interface (100 Mbps). Consequently, on the one hand operating parameters can be sent from external controllers to the CW-201. And on the other hand it is possible to output calculation results such as FFT spectra via the interface to be able to depict them graphically on other devices. Moreover, it is possible to store data on an external, removable storage medium via an USB 1.1 interface (2.0 compatible). The USB interface can also be used for WLAN and Bluetooth dongles, so that the CW-201 is able to communicate with other systems wirelessly.
